One of the most talked about players since prior to last seasons trade deadline has been Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene. If the NHL has taught us anything it is that the trades that are openly talked about, very rarely happen. Take a look at the Saad-Panarin trade, straight out of left field.
Colorado’s General Manager Joe Sakic is certainly feeling the heat on that hot seat as the pressure mounts surrounding this potential trade. Colorado need defence, it doesn’t take an analytics expert to tell you that. Finishing rock-bottom in one of the worst seasons in the salary cap era.
Rumours would suggest that Nashville need to plug the hole that has been left by James Neal who was seemingly gifted to Vegas. I’ve also seen that the Islanders are keen, surely their priorities lie elsewhere this off-season. Carolina could also use some firepower if they are to improve on the second half of last season.
Therefore, any potential trade for Matt Duchene will have to come from a team willing to depart with a talented defensive piece, maybe even two. I cannot see the Avs taking a center in return, it would be barmy. Crazier things have happened in the league of leagues, and the Avs may only need look at Arizona to have that statement proved.
Duchene has the potential to be one of the best players in the league, still only 26, imagine if he was surrounded by competitive talent. The results could be frightening. Duchene needs a new home and Sakic better find it quickly.
